Fortnum and Mason is launching posh boating picnics on the Thames

Fortnum and Mason has been keeping busy. In early May, the swanky department store announced it was opening a 200 square metre biscuit wonderland in Piccadilly, complete with a 70-flavour edible library and even a giant 400g ‘Whoppalossus’ sharing biccy. That’s what we call taking elevenses to the max.

Now, the posh retailer is turning its attention to giving picnics an upgrade, too. Picture this: a gorgeous three-course spread and a glass of champs, all served to you on a private boat. If that sounds right up your canal, then the Fortnum’s on Thames experience is for you.

Yep, Fortnum and Mason has announced that, for the first time ever, it’s launching a private boating picnic on the river. The two-hour experience will be hosted atop Christobel, a vintage boat decked out with details in the shop’s signature pale green hue and striped cushions created by fancy interior designer Colours of Arley.

As for what’s on board, you’ll get one of Fortnum’s signature fresh food picnics – including a starter, mains, pudding, cheese platter and drinks – to share between either four, six or eight guests. Dishes include smoked trout with black garlic crème fraiche, the brand’s signature scotch egg and, to finish, elderflower jelly with fresh berries. You’ll even get to take home the picnic bag as a keepsake once its contents have been scranned.

Picnic plates and drinks will all be dished out by red coated servers, so you won’t have to lift a finger as you meander through scenic stretches of Henley-on-Thames. Plus, if you’re looking to go the extra (nautical) mile, there’s the option to upgrade with Fortnum’s Brut Réserve Champagne or English Sparkling Rosé.

We should warn you that this afternoon out will set you back a pretty penny. Prices begin at £1,000 per charter for four guests, so it’s definitely on the bougie side.

If the hefty price tag doesn’t put you off, you can book the Fortnum’s on Thames experience through the shop’s concierge team here. It’ll be running from July 1-12 to mark the Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Festival. The boat will moor via Hobbs of Henley at Remenham Park Farm, at the start line of the Regatta. Slots will be available between 11.30am-1.30pm and 3pm-5pm each day.
