If your idea of the perfect dip is an al fresco one, last month’s news that swimming in Hampstead Heath just got pricier may have had you shaking your fist in the air. Some of the Heath’s swim tickets rose in price by nearly 30 percent.
Luckily for those willing to brave the cold, the capital still has a few free bathing spots. London’s first official open water swimming area in the River Thames also opened last month. And from July, the city will be welcoming another place for an outdoor dip which doesn’t require you to cough up any cash.
Each year, east London’s Royal Victoria Dock hosts Summer Splash, transforming the waterside spot into a free lido with lifeguards, sandpits, deckchairs and craft and play activities for kids. This year is no exception, and the urban oasis will be welcomed back to the waterfront hub on Friday July 24.

Running throughout the summer until August 17, you’ll be able to practise your backstroke with gorgeous views of the city or, if you’re planning a family day out, there’s also a programme of free family activities.
Summer Splash is part of a wider At The Docks summer events season, featuring 150 activities running from now to September 13. Check out what else is on as part of the programme here.
