Pubs! They are Britain’s pride and joy and we’ve got absolutely tonnes of them. But as any seasoned drinker will know, not all boozers are born equal. Many Brits have their own markers for what sets apart the great from the good. Do they pour a perfectly crisp lager, serve a banging burger, have a lovely beer garden, or just have a particularly eye-catching carpet?
Helping to separate the wheat from the chaff, the Telegraph has just released its annual ranking of the 650 best pubs in the UK, featuring 500 joints from England and 150 from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Pubs were selected by a panel of experts for criteria including a welcoming atmosphere, high-quality drinks, and a strong sense of community.
The capital did us proud, with 44 London boozers featuring in the paper’s ranking including many Time Out favourites.
We love the Coach & Horses on Greek Street, a Soho institution that was once home to London’s self-proclaimed ‘rudest landlord’. He’s gone now, but these days the pub serves a rotating cast of excellent independent ales and an impeccable crisp selection. The Pembury Tavern in Hackney, which is home to one of our favourite ‘zas in the capital, Ace Pizza, is also worth a visit. Gospel Oak’s unpretentious Southampton Arms, known for its pork baps and real ales, is well deserving of a spot in the ranking according to us.
