Londoners are summermaxxing right now. Our skin is permanently coated in a sticky film of suncream, white T-shirts have all acquired irreversible armpit stains, bags are stuffed with half-finished packs of European skinny cigarettes, and bank accounts have been drained by months of partying in parks across the city. Much like the relentless run of heatwaves (we’re on four? Five, now?), the music never stops.
August is serving up epic pop spectacles, hardcore heavyweights and electronic music megastars, making it almost impossible to convince yourself to just ‘stay in and have a chill one’. It’s fine. We’ll rest up and recuperate in autumn. Maybe.

1. The Weeknd
He’s the most listened-to artist in the world for a reason. Catch Abel Tesfaye’s After Hours Til Dawn tour at Wembley Stadium this summer, and you’ll be met with blockbuster visuals and a hit-packed set that’ll leave you constantly wondering where he’ll go next. Supported by Playboi Carti opening the night, you’ve got two generations of chart-conquering rap and R&B colliding under the iconic arch.

2. Ariana Grande
If two years of Wicked promo had you hankering for Ariana’s return to music, you’re in luck. The American pop star is coming back to London with her Eternal Sunshine tour, which features lavish production (you’ve probably seen her being lifted into the air on TikTok) with past and present hits, including ‘hate that i made you love me’, ‘thank u, next’ and ‘One Last Time’ among other effervescent pop hits.
Good for: Girls who will shamelessly try to whistle notes knowing full well they can’t do it

3. ADÉLA
Former Dream Academy contestant turned hyperpop provocateur ADÉLA arrives at Outernet with a sound that collides glossy pop, chaotic production and razor-sharp choreography. Backed by co-signs from Grimes and Dylan Brady, she’s built a reputation for turning maximalist pop songs into impressive live recitals. If you’re looking for the next big thing in pop music, you shouldn’t miss this.

4. Haywire
Hotly-tipped Boston hardcore band Haywire are headlining United and Strong festival’s Thursday pre-show. The group first gained notoriety for their aggressive performances and for releasing fireworks on stage; what’s kept them in people’s minds is their chant-heavy, political songwriting that goes well beyond gimmickry. Alongside them are Splitknuckle, Neolithic, Infinite Wisdom and Brightside, getting you nice and warmed up before the Cro-Mags and Fury-headlined weekender. Tickets for Thursday are re-selling on Instagram and Friday tickets are still available on their website.
Good for: Angsty 30-year-olds with a vintage band T-shirt collection

5. Overmono
Welsh electronic duo Tom and Ed Russell have become one of the UK’s most in-demand live electronic acts, thanks to hits like ‘Good Lies’ and ‘I Have A Love’. This summer, they’re releasing their sophomore album Pure Devotion, which saw them literally ‘oven-bake a cymbal covered in coffee grounds, crisps and vinegar’ during the recording process. How that’ll sound through the Old Royal Naval College’s massive system is anyone’s guess, but it’s all pretty intriguing if you ask me.

6. Man/Woman/Chainsaw
Thrillingly chaotic new band Man/Woman/Chainsaw are releasing their much-hyped debut at Rough Trade East. The London six-piece blends serrated post-punk riffs, soaring violin lines and explosive shout-talked choruses, making them one of the capital’s most exciting live acts. Listen to their biggest song ‘Nosedive’ and you’ll get what I mean.

7. Summer Walker
R&B’s reigning queen of the ‘sad girl who still slays’ aesthetic is bringing her buttery vocals to the capital’s biggest arena, with rising UK star Odeal in support. Join several thousand girlies who have all had their hearts broken in the same way as you collectively recite hits like ‘Girls Need Love’ and ‘Playing Games’ in one messy, smudged mascara and sweat-drenched emotional release.

8. Four Tet
If you’ve ever been to one of Four Tet’s Ally Pally all-nighters or his Brixton residency, you’ll know that this is pure rave euphoria. Kieran Hebden is hosting a massive Finsbury Park all-dayer this August, and it’s looking pretty stacked. With support from Ben UFO, Barker, Aurora Halal, Sofia Kourtesis and Gilles Peterson, it’s the kind of thing that’ll have you there from start to finish.
Good for: Anyone whose idea of a perfect Saturday involves eight straight hours of dancing

9. Tooth
Blending garage rock, second-wave emo and anthemic US alternative, Tooth are one of alternative rock’s hottest new bands. With support from the likes of NME, Kerrang! and BBC 6 Music, they’ve built a brilliant organic following with a sense of community emphasised by making zines and live CDs for fans. One for lovers of Westside Cowboy and Gurriers, here.

10. Peggy Gou
A dominant force in pop-house, Peggy Gou’s signature sun-soaked sound is perfect for peak summer disco dancing. Her Labyrinth on the Thames event marks a defining moment – one she considers a homecoming – with bespoke production in a stunning, historic location. She’s even gone so far as to handpick the support acts PROSPA, MPH and Kelly Lee Owens and design custom merch, so get there early to make the most of it.

11. Cate Le Bon
Welsh art-rock oracle Cate Le Bon is set to perform her gloriously strange songs in an intimate setting this August. Taking place at the ICA, this show perfectly fits Le Bon’s penchant for creating a whimsical atmosphere with her warm and somewhat hallucinatory indie sound. Mercury Prize-nominated Reward gives you a nice taste of her surrealist energy.

12. Fiddlehead
Sometimes you just need to throw yourself around in a pit of sweaty, teary, middle-aged men. That’s what you’ll get from melodic hardcore legends Fiddlehead. Led by Have Heart vocalist Pat Flynn, the Boston band has built a devoted following by turning grief, resilience and hope into towering sing-along anthems. I’ll be there, crying along with you.

13. Jack White
Seeing Jack White live has always involved a degree of unpredictability, which is also the appeal. The former White Stripes frontman famously ditches setlists and veers from classic White Stripes garage-rock stompers to elaborate blues jams without warning. Lean into the phone-free policy and embrace one of the few genuinely live experiences left in rock.

14. Prostitute
Experimental rockers Prostitute have become underground favourites thanks to their abrasive mix of post-punk and Arabic-folk influences. 15. Eartheater
Blurring the lines between art and avant-pop, Eartheater has such a distinctive glitchy, short-of-breath, metallic sound that really does live up to the moniker. Catch Alexandra Drewchin as she transforms her peculiar songwriting into something even stranger on stage. Expect art-meets-pop presentation, featuring costuming that looks like something from a CSM end-of-year project.
