Watch out Tate Modern because there’s about to be a new gallery on the block.

Yep, a shiny new arts venue is opening on the South Bank this month, promising to bring fresh exhibitions, events and artist studios to Bankside.

Hypha Gallery South Bank, which opens on June 25, will feature three rooms of gallery space spanning almost 800 square metres, as well as a dedicated project space and a new showroom designed to support emerging artists.

Created by arts charity Hypha Studios, the new gallery will transform the ground floor of a currently vacant office building on Southwark Bridge Road near the Tate’s power station building on the Thames.

As well as the gallery, it’ll be home to a project space for pop-ups, live events and community collabs. Plus, the arts charity has carved out enough studio space for 17 emerging artists to use for free. Hypha Studios has said that it aims to support around 600 artists in total with the new space, which it has use of for the next year.

So what can we expect from its exhibitions? Well, Hypha Gallery South Bank will launch with three debut shows, all of which will be free to visit.

First up, Bridging the Gap will feature sculptures inspired by Southwark Bridge to ‘consider themes of connection, separation and repair’, according to the gallery. The second inaugural exhibition will also be site specific, exploring how local histories continue to shape Southwark’s future. The third show will be an immersive experience where visitors can listen to the sounds made by microbes and fungi in their natural environments.

The three exhibitions will run until July 26. After that, we can expect a year-round programme of exhibitions, pop-ups, performances and community events from the new gallery space.

Hypha Gallery South Bank will open on June 25 at 42 Southwark Bridge Road, SE1 9EU. Official website here.
