The best pub in London is getting a new pizza kitchen

April 25 was a sad day for south London pizza lovers. Dough Hands waved goodbye to its residency at the Old Nun’s Head pub in Nunhead, meaning you can no longer grab a slice of these heartily topped behemoths this side of the river.

The partnership was a truly killer combo: the Old Nun’s Head was crowned victorious in Time Out’s most recent ranking of the Big Smoke’s 50 best boozers, and was serving up some of the best slices in town.

But fear not, pizzaholics daan saaf, you can soon change out of your black mourning garb. That’s because the Old Nun’s Head has announced a new residency. From May 6, Slice Circle will be serving its New York-style 14-inchers at the pub.

Co-founder Angus Whitfield honed his craft at Dough Hands before launching Slice Circle with Methun Chelvan (previously at Bad Boy Pizza Society), meaning the no-flop bakes could well share an essence with their predecessor’s pies.

Expect a ‘super thin, light, crispy bite, with a juicy crust designed for dunking’, inspired by key New York pizzerias including Luigi’s, Arturo’s and L’Industrie.

As for the all-important menu, just five pizzas will be up for grabs to begin with, priced from £13:

  • Red Pie, with San Marzano, oregano, confit garlic and house breadcrumbs
  • Cheese Pie, with Fior di latte, San Marzano, provolone, British hard cheese and basil
  • Pep Pie, with San Marzano, fior di latte, pepperoni, oregano and pecorino
  • Nun Pie, with San Marzano, fior di latte, soppressata, whipped ricotta, hot honey and pecorino
  • Tamil Pie, with Masala vodka sauce, fior di latte, red onion, lemon yoghurt and coriander

Slice Circle will also be serving up its house tiramisu for dessert, and plans to offer a rotating monthly special or collab pizza from June.

For all the Dough Hands loyalists out there, you can still find its goods at London Fields’ Spurstowe Arms, where it has a permanent residence, and, from May 7, at All My Friends in Hackney Wick. Plus, you’ll also be able to score super-sized slices at this new residency, which promises a ‘fresh new menu’.

Did you see that one of London’s greatest restaurants is coming to the Dusty Knuckle next month?

Plus: massively hyped (and slightly controversial) London restaurant The Yellow Bittern will open in the evenings for the first time.
