London has a formidable roster of art galleries of all shapes and sizes. Next week, however, the capital’s gallery ranks will lose one of its great unsung venues – London Bridge’s Science Gallery is set to close.
Since it opened in 2018, Science Gallery has been known for its innovative and exciting exhibitions. Part of King’s College London, its programme was shaped by a range of voices, with researchers, artists and young locals all contributing to the works on display. In its own words, Science Gallery was designed to ‘spark new ways of thinking about some of the most complex contemporary challenges’.
Past exhibitions have explored everything from gender and dark matter to the future of food. Another highlight was ‘Frequency’ – an unusual installation where students and researchers created original sound pieces and performances inspired by their own biological rhythms.
Science Gallery t is permanently shutting its doors next week, on Friday July 31. In a LinkedIn post, the gallery team wrote that the closure ‘reflects King’s College London’s refocusing of institutional resources towards its education, research and innovation priorities.’
You do still have a week to check out Science Gallery before it closes, though, and the final three exhibitions will be running until the final day. Those shows are:
- The Art of Care: Through the Eyes of Tomorrow’s Doctors – student work about care, community, and day-to-day life in clinics.
- Threads of Protest – crochet works about inequality in maternity care, and advocating for better birth experiences.
- A Thread that Binds Us – two new works by textile and mixed media artist Amber Roper exploring intergenerational mental health.
