Two London restaurants won big at the National Curry Awards 2023

One thing London isn’t short of is Indian restaurants. From the cheerful Brick Lane curry houses to schmancy joints like Gymkhana and Kricket, it’s all too easy to get your hands on the full spectrum of masalas, moilees and vindaloos in the city.

That’s why we’re not surprised to say that two London restaurants won big at the National Curry Awards this year, taking home two of the most prestigious titles. The Lane in Wanstead won Curry Restaurant of the Year, while Asif Iqbal from Manjal Restaurant Group was named Chef of the Year.

On its website, The Lane describes itself as serving ‘fine Indian Cuisine’ adding that dishes are ‘steeped with only the freshest spices, chilli peppers and subtlest of flavourings’. Manjal Restaurant Group specialises in south Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine.

While the ceremony is yet to take place (it’s on October 16 at the House of Lords, the Palace of Westminster), the winners have already been announced. They’ll be honoured by MPs and their peers in the Asian restaurant industry on the big day.

Time Out’s take

Leonie Cooper, Time Out’s food and drink editor said: ‘I am utterly convinced that London has some of the best curries in the country, from classic Stokey veggie joint Rasa’s creamy bagar baingan to Borough Market newcomer Rambutan’s prawn curry with tamarind.’

And while neither of these joints made it into the Curry Awards, it’s no surprise that our city won big at the event.

Did you see that eight London pizzerias have made it to the final of the National Pizza Awards 2023?
